Board of Directors
Two boards assist in the strategic oversight and support of The Service Politics Institute:

The Advisory Board - A development body and think tank for Service-Politics, the prominent SPI Advisory Board tackles the Institute's most difficult challenges. The Advisory Board is expected to raise a portion of the organization's operating budget, advise on the most critical issues, and stay abreast of the Institute's activities. While there are only two annual meetings in Burlington, VT (accesible via tele-conference for out-of-staters), Advisory Board members are available for consulting and networking throughout the year and are active participants of an internal email-discussion list that deliberates on bold initiatives and upcoming obstacles. The Advisory Board is made up of individuals who are excited to use their connections, knowledge and resources to advance Service-Politics on a local and national scale. The Advisory Board often represents the organization in high stakes situations and is constantly on the lookout for new resources. Please email us at for more information and see below for the application.

The Governance Board - The Governance Board's primary responsibility is to set strategic, long term vision for the Institute through the creation of policy and ensure organizational performance by monitoring this policy. Governance Board members are interested in organizational capacity building through policy development and must invest significant time in bi-monthly meetings as well as in research and crafting policy outside of meetings. Term lengths are two years.

Observing the principles of the Policy Governance model set forth by John Carver (Board Leadership: Policy Governance in Action, John Carver ed., No. 52), the Governance Board crafts its values into policies of the four types below. Policies written this way enable the board to focus its wisdom into central, brief documents that are easy and clear guides for the organization (to learn more about Policy Governance, please click here).

Outcomes Policy
The Governance Board defines which human needs are to be met by the Service Politics Institute, for whom, and at what cost. Written with a long-term perspective, these mission-related policies embody most of the Governance Board's part of long-range planning.

Executive Limitations Policy
The Governance Board establishes the boundaries of acceptability within which staff methods and activities can responsibly be left to staff. These limiting policies, therefore, apply to staff means rather than to ends.

Executive-Board Linkage Policy
The Governance Board clarifies the manner in which it delegates authority to staff as well as how it evaluates staff performance on provisions of the Ends and Executive Limitations policies.

Board Self-Governance Policy
The Board determines its own philosophy and accountability in relation to its stakeholders (those individuals that the Institute serves).

Articles of Incorporation
The Service Politics Institute is currently under the fiscal sponsorship of The Center for Progressive Leadership, and thus has not yet filed its Articles of Incorporation to establish it as a legal entity.

Bylaws
The Service Politics bylaws will place board members into the corporation’s legal concept.

Vermont Statutes
Vermont law governing non-profit corporations can be found under Title 11B.

Core Values
The Service Poltiics Core Values are the philosophical cornerstones that steer the organization towards its mission. They are used together to guide actions and visions.
